For promoting the research, conservation, education and extending cooperation on Marine Biology, the National Museum of Biology Marine and Aquarium (NMMBA) and the College of Marine Sciences, National Dong Hwa University began to hold a national symposium in September of 2006 and 2007 respectively, which provided the researchers and graduate students a platform to communicate and interact with scientists outside of the NMMBA.

Starting in 2008, the annual national symposium was transformed into an international symposium entitled "The Omics in the Ocean - The International Symposium for Marine Biology and Biotechnology". Omics represents a field of study in Greek. In mandarin pronunciation, Omics represents the profound secrets or the truth. With the increasing attraction and usefulness of various omic approaches in biological research, we adapt this title to symbolize the effort and eagerness to explore the beauty and truth of the ocean.

NMMBA has held five Symposiums which have attracted 120-150 participants annually, including distinguished scholars, experts and students from around the world.

(The Omics in the Ocean – International Symposium for Biology Marine and Biotechnology) 』。

(The Omics in the Ocean) 』為標題,代表我們以各種整合的知識積極探索海洋之美及其所蘊含真理的努力與熱情。

Annual theme: Recent Advances in Marine Biology, Ecology and Biotechnology

Marine ecology, biology, and biotechnology represent important research avenues on a global scale. To promote communication and dialogue in these fields among marine research centers within and outside of Taiwan, we will invite expert researchers in the fields of ecology, marine biology, and biotechnology to lecture on these subjects to a greater cadre of both local and foreign scientists, as well as students (undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. students). Attendees will ideally benefit from the oral presentations and posters focusing on six major research themes and will have the opportunity to exchange and share their latest research developments, thereby stimulating innovation and collaboration. The six themes include coral biology and symbiosis, ecology, marine marine biodiversity, sustainable marine aquaculture, marine natural product and cetacean research.
